TEACHER FEATURE

By: Shamiah Patillo

What current trends are baffling to you? Why?

Sagging. I don’t understand the reasons for sagging a nice pair of pants. Also, that Instagram and Snapchat stuff -- what is the purpose of it?  Don’t let me get started on Facebook; that is another app I do not understand.

What is your dream vacation?

I would have to say Miami beach. I would like to walk the beach in peace.  And the music there has a good vibe. Also the people -- you can see people just chilling and having fun with their family and friends.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

What makes a good day at school to me is being able to tell yourself you can accomplish anything. If you have a goal, go out and accomplish that goal no matter what it is. Being able to accomplish something, especially a goal, can make you feel much better.”

What’s a typical Saturday night like for you?

Going on road trips -- I usually go to Atlanta to visit different places. I try out restaurants I have not had a chance to eat at and just have fun. I don’t mind the drive -- ain’t nothing like jamming to some music on the way up there and back.

What is one of your hidden talents?

Not many people know I play the drums (whenever I have the time to). If I am stressed, I play the drums; if I am bored, I tend to play the drums. You could call me the little drummer boy, hahaa, nothing too dramatic.

What is your first memory from school?

My first memory from teaching high school was having forty-one ninth graders in one class. I told myself if I could make it through that, I can make it through anything. It was a good experience even if some days were not as good as others.

Are there any embarrassing teaching moments you’re willing to share? What are they?

The first year I started teaching I had to use the restroom, and I accidentally used the girls' bathroom. I did not realize it until I walked out and was like, woah, I was lost for words. That was an embarrassing moment for me, but I just kept going on with my day.

What song should students listen to when doing work for your class?

One song students should listen to is that song by Rihanna, “Work.” You want to know why?  Because students never want to do their work. Maybe playing the song will encourage them to pick their pencils up and write.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

CARPE DIEM! (Seize the day!)

How long would you survive a zombie apocalypse? Why?

Until the eclipse combined with the blood moon passes over the sky…

Until the ocean runs dry…

Survival is strong in this one…

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

I love heights and free-falling.

Skydiving is my favorite hobby.

What kind of driver were you when you first got your license?

Bump Bump goes the curb…

Did I just miss my turn?!
